Stafford is a city and the seat of the county administration in Stafford County in the US state of Virginia. The site is located between Fredericksburg and Alexandria on the west bank of the Potomac River, about 50 kilometers south of Washington.
There are two major highways and a central railroad crossing Stafford, US Highway 1, Interstate 95, and Virginia Railway Express. Like the rest of Northern Virginia and central Maryland, modern Stafford shapes its proximity to the nation's capital. It is largely inhabited by people working for the government, the US military, or many small and medium-sized businesses.
